Vilnius, March 31st. President Rolandas Paksas of the Republic of Lithuania sent today letters of congratulations to the countries that have become, together with Lithuania, full-fledged members of NATO.
“This historical event marks yet another step towards a free and united Europe, consolidated by a strong and sound transatlantic link,” the Lithuanian President said in his letter.
“Having accepted new members, NATO has proved that its enlargement aims at promoting security, stability and democracy in a Europe without dividing lines as well as at ensuring long-lasting prosperity for the Old Continent. At the same time, our membership of NATO should mark the start of a new process – we will have to learn sharing our resources and achievements with the entire family of the transatlantic community,” President Paksas underlined.
The head of Lithuania expressed belief that the new members of the Alliance will make every effort to ensure that NATO is successful in implementing its present and future tasks and that together they will seek to strengthen the transatlantic link so that it becomes the underlying value not only of the 20th but also of the 21st century.
